Notwithstanding the challenges globalization has posed to our societies over the past decades, tangible and intangible cultural exchanges and new forms of local (intersecting) identity-related appropriations have also created innovative spaces for historically marginalized groups, such as and sexual minorities amplify their voices through popular art forms, creating more diversity. Montclair State researchers working in the arts, fashion, gender studies, and critical race theory, for instance, join forces to showcase important global and transnational trends that map the influence of culture, such as film, language, music and dance, not only on local communities, but also on entire populations across nation states. In sum, they help us grasp the politics of culture from a global perspective.
